THE HIVE’S PICK

This week, I’m doing something a little different here. Even though it’s several months away, I wanted everyone to have Canterbury Old Home Day on their calendars. As you might’ve been able to infer, I really enjoy local history and the Canterbury Old Home Day is something I’m really looking forward to in September (the 27th from 11am-4pm to be exact).

They’re going to have local historical re-enactors, including historical tradespeople (blacksmiths, woodcarvers, etc.), and tons of activities for little ones.

If you know of any vendors that might be interested, they’re still accepting people! Contact [email protected] for more details. If you want to take a gander at what past events have looked like, check out www.canterburyhistorical.org.

They are Logee’s, Willibrew, Pizza 101, Hart’s Greenhouse, The Inn at Woodstock Hill, Soothing Elements Massage, Emerald Buddha and The Stomping Ground. I also got feedback about the pricing which I head loud and clear. We will keep the price at a budget friendly $15. Grab yours now!

LAST WEEK’S SCRAMBLE: BUTTS BRIDGE

Image: Michael Hughes

If you're cruising through Canterbury, Connecticut, and stumble upon Butts Bridge, you're in for a treat. This steel Parker truss bridge, built in 1937 by the Fort Pitt Bridge Works, isn't just a way to get across the Quinebaug River—it's a slice of New England history. Spanning 231 feet with its graceful arch, it's a testament to the era's engineering prowess. The bridge was constructed as part of an emergency relief program following the devastating 1936 floods, replacing earlier structures that had stood in the area since colonial times. Its design, characterized by the Parker truss—a variant of the Pratt truss with a polygonal top chord—was a popular choice for longer spans in the early 20th century. In recognition of its historical and architectural significance, Butts Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010 .

Butts Bridge isn't just for history buffs; it's a favorite among kayakers and nature lovers too. The Quinebaug River below offers serene paddling routes, and the surrounding landscape, especially during fall, is a visual delight. Whether you're driving over it, paddling under it, or simply admiring its structure, Butts Bridge stands as a charming reminder of Connecticut's rich past and the enduring beauty of its rural landscapes.

Wind Co Trivia🤔

HIVE: PROPERTY

Step into a living slice of Windham history with this restored 1865 Victorian stunner, originally built for a founder of the American Thread Company. Perched across from the iconic granite mill, this home blends old-school craftsmanship with modern updates—think rebuilt fireplaces, a custom gourmet kitchen, gleaming original floors, and 7 beds, 4.5 baths. There’s even a fully separate 1-bed apartment for guests, in-laws, or rental income.

Outside? Freshly painted in historically accurate colors, a 50-year slate-style roof, patios and porches made for summer hangs, pro landscaping, and a garage big enough for your truck and your toys. This isn’t just a home—it’s Windham’s past, present, and future wrapped in one.
