Good morning, Quiet Corner Swarm!

Today is February 17th, AKA National Random Acts of Kindness Day. The whole idea is simple: do something small for someone else, for no reason other than being a decent human.

So this week, toss a few bucks to the guy at the light, hold the door, text a friend you have been meaning to check on, or cover someone’s coffee. Windham County runs on little moments like that, and they add up fast.

Let’s dive in!

Dinner Club is back this week on Feb 19 at 6 PM in Glastonbury, and it is shaping up to be a great night out. Come solo, grab dinner with good locals, and make a few new connections without the awkward vibe.

BUZZ & TELL

🐶Adopt-a-pal: Meet Skyler, a 2-month-old Great Pyrenees mix, a future gentle giant who’s great with kids and dogs and already giving “fluffy guardian of the backyard” energy.

🏡House of the week: An 1802 antique Colonial on five acres, with wide-board floors, a vaulted great room, and a massive granite fireplace that basically steals the show. It’s been thoughtfully updated where it counts (kitchen, baths, heating, septic, and fresh exterior work) but still keeps that classic New England charm. Check it out!

🔭Sky report: New Moon hits tonight (Feb 17), so early week is your best shot for crisp, dark skies. Look up around 8:00 pm for Orion blazing in the south, with Taurus and the Pleiades nearby. Mercury (and Venus low in the west) are catchable right after sunset if you’ve got a clear horizon.

HIVE PICK: TAKE THE PLUNGE, FIGHT LOCAL HUNGER

Willimantic | 15th Annual Plunge for Hunger | 12 PM

The Plunge for Hunger at Lauter Park is one of those classic local events that is equal parts wild and meaningful. Over the years, participants have helped raise well over $1 million for Covenant Soup Kitchen, turning one freezing jump into real support for neighbors who rely on daily meals. Expect costumes, big energy, and a crowd cheering people on as they sprint into icy water for a cause that matters. If you have ever thought about doing it, this is your year: bring a towel, warm clothes, and a little courage.

Windham County Observer (Putnam, Conn.), February 17, 1926

Spring fashion meant pure silk hosiery, wool plaid “lumber jacks,” and department stores reminding you it’s “not how much we can get for what we give, but how much we can give for what we get.” Also, sport jackets for five bucks… inflation really said hold my coffee.
