Good morning, Quiet Corner Swarm!
Today is Tuesday, May 19th aka National May Ray Day, which is basically the calendar’s way of telling us to stop fossilizing on the couch and go find some sunshine.
So, in the spirit of fresh air, better moods, and pretending a walk uphill counts as therapy, I put together a guide to my favorite hikes in the area below. Have a look, pick a trail, and let the May rays do their thing.

MY LOCAL LOWDOWN: HIKING EDITION
I pulled together my favorite Quiet Corner hikes for anyone who likes fresh air, pretty views, and the occasional reminder that this part of Connecticut is quietly showing off. These are the trails worth wandering, from peaceful forest loops to spots where you’ll catch yourself saying, “Okay, this is actually gorgeous.”
Pack some water, wear shoes you don’t mind getting a little dirty, and consider this your sign to go touch grass in the best possible way.

BUZZ & TELL
🐶Adopt-a-pal: Meet Birdie, a 1.5-year-old Poodle/Great Pyrenees mix with a nonstop wagging tail, a sweet little sunshine personality, and strong “yes, I will improve this household immediately” energy.
🏡House of the week: This 1840 Harrisville District School got the full glow-up, turning a former one-room schoolhouse into a 2-bed, 1.5-bath Woodstock charmer with 1,274 square feet of history that does not require raising your hand to use the bathroom. It sits on 0.4 acres and gives you antique bones, modern livability, and the kind of backstory Zillow usually can’t fake. Check it out!
🔭Sky report: This week’s sky has a nice little “oh wait, that’s cool” moment on Thursday night, when the crescent moon cozies up near the Beehive Cluster, a fuzzy little swarm of stars in Cancer that looks way better through binoculars. Earlier in the week, keep an eye west after sunset as the moon moves near Venus and Jupiter, then by the weekend the moon fattens up toward first quarter and starts hogging more of the spotlight.

How Dinner Club Works
Take a quick personality quiz, grab your ticket to save your seat, and we’ll match you with a small group for dinner. You can bring a plus-one now too, so drag your favorite social sidekick along.
The restaurant is revealed day before, and the secret after-party spot drops during dinner. We already have 40+ people signed up, so if you’ve been “thinking about it,” this is the part where thinking becomes clicking.

The 10-Minute Spring Roof Check Every Homeowner Should Do

Your roof is one of those things you ignore until it starts doing indoor waterfall cosplay. Not ideal. Especially when Connecticut decides to throw one of those sideways-rain, tree-branch-flying, “was that thunder or did the trash cans just leave town?” kind of storms.
Before summer weather starts getting dramatic, take 10 minutes and give your roof a quick look. Check for missing or curling shingles, loose flashing, clogged gutters, dark streaks, soft-looking spots, or those mysterious ceiling stains that definitely were not there last week.
The good news? You do not need to become a roofing expert overnight. If something looks off, McClintock Roofing can take a look and let you know if it is a quick repair, something to keep an eye on, or a bigger issue worth handling before it turns into an expensive surprise.

3rd Thursday Street Fest

Willimantic | May 21st | 6 PM
Willimantic Street Fest is kicking off the season on Thursday, May 21 with Main Street doing what Main Street does best: music, food, vendors, and just the right amount of beautiful chaos. Expect 10 live performances across 6 stages, a beer garden, 25 food vendors, and 115 local vendors and artisans stretching from Way Uptown to Way Downtown. Basically, it’s a full-on town takeover with shopping, specials from local businesses, live music, and enough food options to make “just grabbing dinner” turn into a three-hour wander.

FOUR-TRAIN CHAOS

Only 22.7% of you got this one right: the infamous Great East Thompson Train Wreck involved four trains, making it one of the only railroad accidents of its kind in U.S. history. It happened on a cold, foggy morning on December 4, 1891, when a dispatcher sent a freight train onto the wrong track, forgetting another freight train was already sitting in East Thompson. The two freight trains smashed head-on at about 6:40am, throwing cars across both tracks. Then came the nightmare sequel: the Long Island and Eastern States Express rounded the curve at about 50 mph and slammed into the wreckage. Minutes later, the Norwich Steamboat Express came barreling in too, crashing into the back of the passenger train and setting part of it on fire.
Somehow, in a disaster involving four engines, two freight trains, two passenger trains, fire, twisted steel, and hundreds of injuries, only two people were killed: engineer Harry Tabor and fireman Jeremiah Fitzgerald. The whole thing unfolded in about five minutes, destroyed all four engines, wrecked a sleeper and baggage car, and tore up roughly 500 yards of track east of the station. Basically, Thompson had one of the wildest railroad disasters in American history sitting in its backyard, and most of us drive past the Quiet Corner like it’s just antique shops, stone walls, and good cider donuts.

Advice from a local CT Attorney
Thinking about buying or selling? Before you sign anything, here’s a pro-tip from a local CT real estate attorney: don’t wait until the contract is drafted to involve your legal team. Having an attorney review your initial offer can prevent costly title issues and zoning surprises down the road.
