Good morning, Quiet Corner Swarm! Today is Tuesday 2/3, and it’s some National Day, but it’s been too dang cold out for me to care this week! I wanted to shoot a quick reminder to everyone about our Taste 2 Towns Passport Checklist (which ends on the 8th). If you want a shot at winning a $50 gift card (we have 4 of them to giveaway) to a local restaurant (keeping which ones a mystery for now, but they’ll be in Willi), get your behind to Willimantic or Mansfield and try some amazing food!
The Passport Checklist:
Hit a Coffee/Breakfast Spot
Grab Lunch
Grab Dinner
Get a Dessert/Sweet Treat
Grab Something to go (takeout)
Try a New Spot
Make sure to take some pictures, let me know which ones you checked off, and email me at [email protected]
Pro Tip: You can check off several of the items on the checklist in one visit! I.e. Stop by Good Times Coffee for breakfast or lunch, grab something savory and a sweet treat, and you’ve knocked out a few right there!
Also, there is a lot of amazing things going on this week, no matter where you are in Windham County, bundle up and get out there!

CALENDAR UPDATE
Alright Windham County, we finally did the thing: we launched our local events calendar so you can see what’s happening without digging through 14 Facebook posts, three flyers, and your aunt’s “maybe” comment thread. It’s live at events.quietcornerbuzz.com, and it’s in beta, which is a fancy way of saying it’s usable right now but you might catch a few weird hiccups while we iron things out. If you spot something off let us know so we can make it better fast or just send me your feedback if you have any!

ROMANTIC WILLIMANTIC CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL

Downtown Willimantic is basically turning into a walkable chocolate village on Saturday, February 7 starting at 10am and going all day and honestly… yes please. Hit the Chocolate Chip Stroll (think trick-or-treating, but with Valentine vibes and way better snacks), catch live music popping up around Main Street, and vote on the window decorating contest like you’re on a very sweet jury.
There’s also the “Cupid Made Me Do It” 2-mile run/walk benefiting WAIM, a cake baking contest with legit prizes, plus artists, crafters, and all the downtown shops doing their thing.
Bonus: Willimantic Food Co-op is celebrating its 46th birthday during the festival, and at 12:00pm there’s a Plunge for Hunger to support Covenant Soup Kitchen (jump in or just watch like a responsible adult). More details.

BUZZ & TELL
🐶Adopt-a-pal: Meet Liberty, a big sweet smartie who knows her basics, is super food-motivated, and would happily trade treats for cuddles (especially the “snuggle in bed with my people” kind), and she’s spayed, microchipped, and fully up to date.
🏡House of the week: A year-round lake house with huge panoramic windows, two stone fireplaces, a finished lower level made for hangouts, and a deck path that leads straight down to your own waterfront dock for kayaking, fishing, and “one more sunset” energy. Check it out!
🔭Sky report: If you only look up once this week, make it Jupiter. It is the stupid-bright “star” that pops out soon after sunset, and even a cheap little telescope can show you its big moons lined up like tiny dots. One more easy win: late Saturday night (Feb 7) into Sunday (Feb 8), the Moon hangs near a bright star called Spica, so it looks like a clean little two-pack in the sky.

FUN
All that snow we just got had me thinking: if we’re going to be trapped in a winter wonderland, we might as well weaponize it for fun. I pulled together the best sledding spots in Windham County so you can send it at King Street Hill, Riverside Park, Woodstock Academy, and a few other local gems that turn into pure chaos in the best way. If I missed your go-to hill, hit reply and tell me what deserves a spot on the list:

WHAT’S IN A NAME:
QUASSET ROAD
Last week’s word scramble was QUASSET ROAD, and it sounds like a cute little made-up backroad name, but it’s actually an old Native place-name that stuck. “Quasset” is the shortened, worn-down version of Wabbaquasset, commonly explained as the “mat-producing place/country” because local reeds and rushes were used to make mats. The area is tied to the region’s “praying village” history from the 1600s connected to missionary John Eliot, and Woodstock tradition points to nearby “Pulpit Rock” as a spot where he preached, though historians note the exact location isn’t confirmed.
